With the rising cost of electricity and a growing awareness of sustainability, many homeowners are considering solar panels as a way to power their homes more efficiently and reduce long-term bills. But if you're new to the topic, it's natural to have a few questions.

What are solar panels, and how do they work?
The term “solar panel” can refer to two different systems: one that generates electricity (solar PV panels) and one that heats water (solar thermal panels). If your goal is to reduce your electricity bill and carbon footprint, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are the way to go. These panels absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity using semiconductor materials.

How much electricity can solar PV panels generate?
That depends on a few factors—like the size of your system, the direction your roof faces, your geographic location, and the type of panels used. On a clear day, 1 square metre of panels can generate around 150 watts of power—enough to run a laptop. A typical 3kW home system (about 20 sq. m) can produce approximately 2,600 kWh per year, covering more than 40% of an average Irish home’s electricity needs.

Do solar panels work in cloudy weather?
Yes! While they perform best in direct sunlight, solar panels still generate electricity on overcast days. Ireland’s climate may not be sunny year-round, but there’s still plenty of daylight to make solar a practical option.

Do I need planning permission?
In most domestic situations, if your system is under 12 square metres and covers less than 50% of your roof area, planning permission is not required. Larger systems may need approval, so it’s always best to double-check before installing.

What about batteries?
Battery storage systems can store unused electricity generated during the day so it’s available at night. While not essential, batteries help increase your self-consumption and make the most of your solar setup.

Do they require maintenance?
Solar PV systems are low-maintenance but not maintenance-free. It’s important to regularly check the system’s performance - your installer can guide you on expected output. Occasional cleaning may also be necessary, especially if you live near a busy road or the sea.
